'Happy Death Day' Provides Clever Thrills
Happy Death Day is about a care-free sorority girl, nicknamed Tree, who gets murdered on her birthday. That’s a pretty grim birthday present, but not the end of her story. Somehow she gets stuck in a time loop that makes her relive the same day over and over. But as she continues to be murdered, she realizes that she’s getting weaker each time she dies, which makes it crucial for her to figure out who her murderer is as soon as possible.
The beginning of the film shows us what a typical day is like for Tree. She wakes up in a random dorm room with a hangover, she’s late to class, and has to deal with her stuck-up sorority sisters. It’s no surprise that this queen-bee has haters. You can tell right away that she’s not exactly the nicest person… She ignores her dad’s calls, has an affair with her married professor, and talks to guys that her friends have a crush on. So, the killer could basically be anyone. This is what I think makes this movie so much fun to watch. I was so excited to see who the killer was. And by the middle of the movie, I was pretty confident about my guess. There’s a twist that made me confused during part of the film, but when the killer was revealed at the end of the movie, I was so proud of myself for guessing the right person.
I’m going to be honest though. I don’t like horror movies! I get scared very easily, so I’ve only seen about three scary movies in total. But when I saw the commercial for this film there was just something about it that made overlook my fear and just really want to watch it. I’m so glad I did because I loved this movie. Having the same day repeat in a film is a pretty tough task to create without being too repetitive and boring, but I think the creators of this film did a great job! Not only was this movie scary, but it’s also very funny at times and even has a bit of romance. I give this film four out of five stars. It’s perfect for scaredy-cats like me! Just be prepared to jump up in your seat every now and then because this movie is definitely a thriller.
